BEFORE YOU SWIM

Making your first swim together a good one.

A few simple steps make your first swim with a new hobbimate easy and enjoyable.

  • Agree on the session. Before you meet, decide whether it's a relaxed social swim, a fitness session or a structured training set. That way you're both expecting the same distance and pace.
  • Pick the right spot. Local aquatic centres are great for lap swimming and training. Ocean pools and bay beaches suit relaxed swims. At the beach, always swim at a patrolled beach, between the red and yellow flags.
  • Know your lane. Share your rough pace (for example, your 100 m time) so you can choose the slow, medium or fast lane together. In Australian pools, keep left and swim in a circle when the lane is shared.
  • Bring the basics. Togs, goggles, a cap, a towel and a water bottle are all you need. Add a kickboard or pull buoy for a technique session.
  • Warm up and check in. Start with a few easy laps, then talk through how you're feeling before stepping up the pace.

Swimming with a partner keeps you consistent, gives you someone to compare splits with and makes early-morning laps much easier to show up for.
